Starlink Mini Hail Guard: Who Actually Needs Impact Protection?

A Starlink Mini that lives outside is betting its face against the weather, and most of the weather loses. Rain, snow, heat, UV — the dish handles all of it. The exception is the stuff that arrives with velocity: hail, falling branches, wind-thrown debris, the occasional rock from a mower.

That bet has bad odds in the wrong geography. If you're anywhere hail is a season rather than a surprise, a permanently mounted dish spends every storm exposed, face up, at exactly the angle hail arrives. And if a stone cracks it, you're shopping for a new dish, not a part.

You can't run to the roof when the sky turns green. The Starlink Mini Hail Guard is the version of that errand you only do once.

What it actually is

The hail guard is a shielded enclosure the dish lives inside, not a cover you throw on when the forecast looks bad.

Four ASA corner pieces arrive pre-assembled as a frame, holding a 3 mm polycarbonate shield — 282 × 244 mm, or about 11.1 × 9.6 inches — over the face of the dish. Polycarbonate is the same family of material sold under the Lexan® name, and impact resistance is the entire reason it's here. The dish slides in from the side after you remove four screws, so getting it in and out doesn't mean disassembling the whole enclosure.

Assembled, the whole thing stands 46 mm — about 1.8 inches — and mounts flat through four 9 mm screw holes at the corners. It ships with twelve M4 Phillips screws, and those screws thread into brass heat-set inserts rather than into the plastic itself. That detail matters more than it sounds: threads cut into plastic wear out after a few assembly cycles, while brass inserts take the same screw indefinitely. If you're pulling the dish every winter, the enclosure doesn't care.

It's a fixed installation for a dish that stays put — a roof, a pergola, a post, a shop wall. It isn't a vehicle accessory, and it isn't for a dish you deploy and stow.

Two materials, two jobs

The frame and the shield are different materials because they're solving different problems.

The frame is UV-resistant ASA, the same material every mount we make is printed in. Its job is to survive sun exposure for years without yellowing or going brittle — the slow kind of damage. The shield is polycarbonate because its job is the fast kind: taking a hit and not shattering. Each material is doing the thing it's best at, which is why the guard isn't printed as one piece of one plastic.

Who actually needs one

You probably want one if:

  • Your Mini is permanently mounted — roof, post, or pole — somewhere hail happens most years. If you're in the Plains, the Front Range, or anywhere locals say "hail season" without irony, a dish that can't be brought inside needs its protection bolted on.
  • The dish sits under trees. Falling branches and acorn-season debris hit harder and more often than hail in a lot of the country.
  • It's mounted somewhere things get thrown — near a mower line, a gravel driveway, a job site.
  • Getting to the dish is a ladder-and-both-hands job, so bringing it in ahead of a storm was never realistic.

You can probably skip it if:

  • Your dish rides inside the vehicle on glass with a suction mount. It's in the cabin; the glass is the hail guard. Our suction mount guide covers that whole lineup.
  • You deploy and stow — the dish goes out at camp and comes back in after. A dish that sleeps indoors doesn't need armor.
  • The dish is reachable in thirty seconds and your weather gives warning. Carrying it inside is free.

The guard is for the dish that has to sit there and take it. If yours doesn't, save the cash.

The shield is the sacrificial part

The design assumes the shield takes the hit, and that's why it's replaceable.

After a serious storm, you inspect the polycarbonate, and if it's chewed up or cracked, you swap in a replacement shield for $75 and keep the frame. The dish never took the impact; the part that did unscrews. That's the same reason we sell every suction cup, screw, and magnet individually — the wear part should be the cheap part, not the whole product.

Compare the failure modes. Without a guard, hail's worst case is a dead dish and however many days you're offline waiting on a replacement. With one, the worst case is a scarred piece of polycarbonate that did its job — and the dish behind it never noticed.

Mounting it

The four 9 mm corner holes take the fastener that suits your surface — lag screws into roof framing, bolts through a bracket. We sell 18-8 stainless steel oval head screws as spare parts if you need mounting hardware. At 46 mm assembled, it keeps a low enough profile that wind isn't fighting you, and the flat base means no adapter between the enclosure and the surface.

The short version

If your Starlink Mini lives outside, unattended, in a place where the sky throws things, the hail guard is cheap insurance with a replaceable wear part. If your dish sleeps indoors or rides behind glass, you don't need it, and we'd rather tell you that than sell you one.
