Suction Cup vs. Screw-In vs. Magnetic: Which Starlink Mini Mount Is Right for You?

Choosing the right mount for your Starlink Mini comes down to one question: how permanent do you need it to be? Whether you're setting up on a rental car, a boat, or a rooftop, there's a mount type built for your situation. Here's a breakdown of the three main options (suction cup, screw-in, and magnetic) so you can pick the right one before you buy.

Suction Cup Mounts: Maximum Flexibility, Zero Drilling

Suction cup mounts attach to the interior glass of your sunroof, moonroof, or windows — no drilling, no adhesive, no marks. Because the dish sits inside the cabin rather than out in the airflow, you can leave it mounted and drive with it. They're ideal if you:

• Travel frequently and need to move your Starlink Mini between vehicles
• Are renting a vehicle or boat and can't drill
• Want a quick setup and teardown
• Don't want to put holes in a new vehicle

Our Starlink Mini Suction Cup Mount uses four heavy-duty locking suction cups and sits just 1.75 inches from the glass, low enough to fit under most sunroof shades. It comes in two layouts — short-side and long-side — so you can match the shape of your opening.

Got a smaller moonroof or a boat hatch? The Compact Edition has a smaller 16.5 × 10.25 inch footprint, though it extends 3.4 inches down from the glass and will not fit behind a sunroof shade.

Tesla and coated glass. A suction mount only works if the glass passes the Starlink signal, and Tesla's newer heat-rejecting glass doesn't. Pre-2025 Model Y and Model 3 roofs pass it; the 2025-and-later Model Y roof, the Model Y L roof and rear hatch, and the Cybertruck roof all have a metallic layer that blocks it. The front windshield on those vehicles does pass signal, but a suction mount on a windshield is for parked use only. Not sure which glass you have? Run an app obstruction test before ordering: hold the dish against the roof glass where the mount will go and check the Starlink app for a connection and obstructions.

Screw-In (Roof) Mounts: The Permanent, Rock-Solid Option

If you have a fixed location like a home roof, a permanent vehicle install, or a cabin, a screw-in mount is the most secure and weather-resistant choice. Once installed, it won't shift in high winds or heavy rain.

• Handles extreme weather better than suction or magnetic options
• Cleaner cable routing for long-term installs
• Low-profile and open, so air can still reach the back of the dish

Our Starlink Mini Roof Mount is designed for direct surface mounting and works on shingle, metal, and flat roofs. It ships with 18-8 stainless steel oval head screws (#12 × 2"). Seal under and around every mounting point, and don't over-tighten — the screws hold, the sealant waterproofs.

Which way does the roof face? A flat roof mount holds the dish flat against the roof, so your roof decides where the dish points. Starlink dishes aim at the part of the sky with the most satellites, which in the US means toward the north, tilted about 20 degrees, and the Starlink app asks you to rotate the dish to within a few degrees of that target. Flat roofs on houses, RVs, and vans work well: rotate the mount to match the app's target before you screw it down. A north-facing roof slope is close to ideal. A roof that slopes toward the south tilts the dish away from the satellites and puts the ridge in its view, so expect obstruction dropouts and a misaligned alert. Before ordering, set the dish where the mount will go and run the Starlink app's obstruction check.

Best for: Home rooftops, permanent vehicle builds, cabins, and off-grid installs.

Magnetic Mounts: Fast Attach, Fast Detach

Magnetic mounts sit between suction and screw-in in terms of commitment. They grip a steel surface instantly, with no drilling and no tools. They're a good fit where you want a quick, repeatable attach and detach cycle.

Our Starlink Mini Magnetic Mount uses four rubber-coated neodymium magnets rated at 65 lbs each, for 260 lbs of combined holding force. The rubber coating helps protect your roof's paint, and the brackets are UV-resistant ASA.

⚠ Check your roof first: magnets need steel. They will not hold on aluminum body panels — which rules out the aluminum-bodied Ford F-150 (2015 and newer) and a number of luxury vehicles. Touch a fridge magnet to your roof before ordering. If it doesn't stick, a magnetic mount won't either.
