How to Mount a Starlink Mini on a Sunroof (No Drilling Required)

Before You Start: Measure Your Shade Clearance

If you want to be able to close your sunroof shade with the mount installed, measure first. With the Starlink Mini attached, the total height from the glass to the furthest point of the mount and dish is exactly 1.75 inches. Most sunroof shades clear that, but shade clearance varies by vehicle and model year, so check yours before ordering rather than after.

Mounting to a smaller moonroof or a boat hatch instead? The Compact Edition has a smaller 16.5 × 10.25 inch footprint, but it extends 3.4 inches down from the glass and will not fit behind a sunroof shade.

Step 1: Choose Your Mounting Surface

Suction cups must be mounted on smooth glass surfaces only — specifically the interior glass of your sunroof. Do not attempt to mount on painted metal roofs, plastic trim, rubber seals, or any surface with a matte or textured finish, as suction grip will be unreliable or unsafe on these materials.

For the best signal, aim for a spot on the sunroof glass with a clear view of the sky in all directions. The center of the sunroof panel typically works well.

The mount comes in two layouts — short-side and long-side suction cup placement — so pick whichever matches the shape of your sunroof opening.

Step 2: Clean the Glass Surface

This step is critical. Even a thin layer of dust, wax, or oil will reduce suction strength significantly. Wipe the interior glass mounting area thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry completely before attaching the mount. Do not use soap or water as residue can interfere with adhesion.

Step 3: Attach the Mount to the Dish

Slide each bracket over the sides of the Starlink Mini. Don't snap them on — they should slide on easily from the side. If you're forcing it, you're going at it from the wrong angle.

Step 4: Attach the Suction Cup Mount to the Glass

Release the latch on each suction cup. Position the Suction Cup Mount on the cleaned interior glass, press each cup firmly against the surface, then rotate the latch handle to lock it down. Give the mount a firm tug in multiple directions to confirm every cup is seated before you let go of it.

Step 5: Route the Cable

Run the Starlink cable along the roofline and into the vehicle through a door seal or window gap. Avoid pinching the cable in a door frame. If you're doing a semi-permanent install, cable clips or adhesive cable guides can keep the run tidy along the roof edge.

Step 6: Check Orientation and Sky View

Power on the Starlink Mini and open the Starlink app. Use the obstruction checker to confirm the dish has a clear view of the sky through the sunroof glass. Adjust the mount position if needed before driving.

Tips for Driving with a Suction Cup Mount

Because the dish sits inside the cabin rather than out in the airflow, you can leave it mounted and drive with it. A few habits keep it reliable:

• Re-check suction grip before every trip, especially after temperature changes. Heat and cold affect suction cup performance on glass.
• Remove the mount if you're going through a car wash or expect heavy rain at highway speeds.
• In very hot climates, park in shade when possible. Prolonged direct sun heating the glass can soften the suction seal over time.
• If you notice any movement or vibration at speed, pull over and reseat the mount before continuing.

If a Suction Cup Loses Grip

Suction cups can warp over time, especially in heat. If one stops holding, you don't need a new mount:

• Reset the shape. Remove the cup from the mount and soak it in hot water. That returns it to its original profile and usually restores grip.
• Clean the face. A damp cloth — no soap — then let it dry fully before reattaching.
