How to Mount a Starlink V5 on a Sunroof (No Drilling Required)

The Starlink V5 is the first full-size residential dish that genuinely makes sense inside a vehicle. At 2.4 lb it weighs about a third of what the previous Standard dish did, and with the V5 suction cup mount it holds to the interior glass of your sunroof with four locking suction cups — no drilling, no adhesive, no permanent anything. Before You Start: Measure Twice

Shade clearance. If you want to close your sunroof shade with the mount installed, measure first. With the V5 attached, the total height from the glass to the furthest point of the mount and dish is exactly 1.75 inches. Most sunroof shades clear that, but clearance varies by vehicle and model year, so check yours before ordering rather than after.

Glass area. The mounted footprint is 12.5 × 21 inches. The V5 is a full-size dish, so confirm your sunroof glass gives it that much room with the dish still seeing sky.

Step 1: Choose Your Mounting Surface

Suction cups belong on smooth glass only — the interior side of your sunroof, or a windshield or window if that's where your sky view is. Don't mount on painted metal, plastic trim, rubber seals, or anything textured; suction grip is unreliable on all of them.

For the best signal, pick a spot with a clear view of the sky in all directions. The center of the sunroof panel usually works.

Step 2: Clean the Glass

This step is doing more work than any other. A thin film of dust, wax, or oil cuts suction strength significantly. Wipe the mounting area with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry completely. Skip soap and water — residue interferes with grip.

Step 3: Slide the Brackets onto the Dish

The mount is two ASA brackets: one for the top edge of the dish, one for the bottom — the bottom bracket goes on the side with the kickstand and pipe-adapter hardware. Slide each bracket on from the side. Don't snap them on. They should go on easily; if you're forcing one, come at it from a different angle.

Step 4: Attach the Mount to the Glass

Release the latch on each suction cup. Position the mount on the cleaned interior glass, press each cup firmly against the surface, then rotate each latch handle to lock it. Before you let go, give the mount a firm tug in several directions to confirm every cup is seated.

Step 5: Route the Cable

Run the Starlink cable along the roofline and down to wherever the router lives. Avoid pinching it in a door frame; adhesive cable clips keep a semi-permanent run tidy. Step 6: Check Orientation and Sky View

Power the dish on and open the Starlink app. Run the obstruction checker to confirm a clear view of the sky through the glass, and adjust position before you drive.

Driving with the Mount Installed

Because the dish rides inside the cabin rather than out in the airflow, you can leave it mounted and drive — that's the point of an interior glass mount. A few habits keep it reliable:

• Re-check suction grip before every trip, especially after big temperature swings.
• Remove the mount before a car wash, and ahead of heavy rain at highway speeds.
• In hot climates, park in shade when you can. Prolonged sun on the glass softens the suction seal over time.
• If you notice movement or vibration at speed, pull over and reseat the mount before continuing.

If a Suction Cup Loses Grip

Cups warp over time, especially in heat. You don't need a new mount:

• Reset the shape. Pull the cup off the mount and soak it in hot water; it returns to its original profile and usually grips like new.
• Clean the face. Damp cloth, no soap, dry fully before reattaching.
