Magnetic Starlink Mounts: Will They Hold on Your Vehicle?

A magnetic mount is the fastest way to put a Starlink Mini on a vehicle. No drilling, no adhesive, no suction cups to seat — set it on the roof and the magnets do the rest. Our magnetic mounts pull with 192 lbs of combined force, and they come off just as fast when it's time to pack up.

But every magnetic mount ever made shares one hard requirement: the surface has to be steel. Not aluminum, not fiberglass, not composite — steel. And more vehicles than you'd think have switched to aluminum panels.

So before you order, spend two minutes answering one question: is the panel you're planning to mount on actually steel? Here's how to check, what the force ratings really mean, and which of our three magnetic options fits your setup.

What 192 lbs of holding force actually means

The Magnetic Mount and Magnetic Enclosure each use four encased ceramic magnets rated at 48 lbs of pull apiece — 192 lbs combined. The magnets sit in powder-coated steel cases and fasten to the ASA brackets with stainless steel M8 square nuts.

Two things to understand about that number:

  • It's a straight-pull rating. 48 lbs is what it takes to pull one magnet directly off a clean, flat steel surface. Forces in the real world — wind gusts, a bumped corner, a curved panel — load the magnets at an angle instead, which is exactly why you want this much headroom instead of a rating that just barely covers the weight of the dish.
  • It assumes full contact. The rating only holds when the magnet face sits flush on the panel. Sharp roof curvature or debris under one corner reduces the grip, which is why the install steps say to check that all four magnets make full contact before you walk away.

The two-minute check: is your panel steel?

Take an ordinary fridge magnet out to your vehicle and touch it to the exact spot you plan to mount on. If it snaps on firmly, the panel is steel and a magnetic mount will grip it. If it slides off or barely holds, the panel is aluminum or composite, and no magnetic mount — ours or anyone's — will hold there.

Test the actual panel, not the badge on the tailgate. Modern vehicles mix materials: a truck can have a steel cab roof and an aluminum bed, and hoods are often aluminum even when the roof is steel. The spot where the magnet sticks is the spot where the mount goes.

The 2015+ F-150 problem (and friends)

The best-known trap is the Ford F-150: from 2015 on, its body panels are aluminum, and magnets will not hold on it. A number of luxury vehicles and newer trucks use aluminum panels too, and manufacturers change materials between model years — which is why the fridge-magnet test on your specific vehicle beats any list you'll find online.

If your panel fails the test, you're not out of options — you're just not a magnet customer:

  • Driving with the dish? An interior glass suction cup mount holds the Mini inside your sunroof or window, out of the airflow — it's designed to stay up while you drive.
  • Permanent install? The screw-in roof mount bolts to shingle, metal, or flat roofs with stainless hardware.
  • Boat or deck railing? The boat and rail mount clamps poles from 5/8" up to 2".

Set it up when you park — not while you drive

Magnetic mounts are exterior mounts, and we treat them as stationary equipment: mount the dish when you're parked, and take it down before you drive. Out on the roof, a moving vehicle puts wind load on the dish that has nothing to do with how well the magnets grip a parked one.

The upside of the magnetic routine is speed: parking, placing the mount, and sliding the Mini in takes well under a minute once you've done it twice.

The Magnetic Mount is the dedicated cradle: 350 × 350 mm of footprint standing just 61 mm tall, with the dish out in the open so air moves across it naturally.

The Magnetic Enclosure wraps the same 192 lb magnet system around a 3 mm polycarbonate shield, so the dish is protected from hail and debris while it's deployed. The Mini slides in from the side, and the assembled unit stands 53 mm tall. The Hybrid Mount is the flexible one: three 48 lb magnets for steel surfaces, plus four 7 mm screw holes so the same mount can become a permanent surface install later. It's explicitly stationary-use only, like the rest of this page.

Placement and care

  • Pick a spot with a clear view of the sky, on a flat run of the panel — avoid sharp curves that keep a magnet corner off the surface.
  • Wipe the panel clean and dry first. Grit under a magnet face costs grip.
  • Seat the mount and confirm all four magnets (three on the Hybrid) sit flush.
  • To remove, lift from one edge and peel it up rather than sliding it across the panel.
  • On long deployments, glance at the contact points now and then, the same way you'd check any exterior gear.

Spare magnets and hardware

Every wear part in these mounts is sold individually, so a lost magnet doesn't mean a new mount: the 48 lb encased ceramic magnet and the stainless M8 square nuts are both in the spare parts collection.
